Living in Zuid
Four minutes to Schiphol, broad avenues, spacious apartments, and the kind of quiet only Buitenveldert offers. Logistics over nightlife.
What it's like
Zuid has two faces. The Zuidas with the glass towers of ABN Amro and ING, packed during the day, empty on weekends. And Buitenveldert, a quiet postwar residential neighborhood with broad streets, 1950s portico buildings, and families. Between them sits Beatrixpark, the green heart where we picnic in summer and run in the morning.
What makes Zuid unique is the commute. Station Amsterdam Zuid has the direct train to Schiphol: four minutes. For anyone working internationally or flying often, that's gold. The Thalys to Brussels and Paris also leaves from here, IC trains to Den Haag, Rotterdam, Utrecht. No other Amsterdam neighborhood has this logistics advantage.
For VU students this is the neighborhood. The university is 5-10 minutes on foot or by bike, rents are reasonable compared to Centrum. For Zuidas employees: 5 minutes walking to work, 4 minutes train to Schiphol. Many international families live in Buitenveldert because of the international schools.
Beethovenstraat is the gastronomic strip: Restaurant De Kas (technically Frankendael), Mercat for Catalan, Klein Kalfje. Zuidas lunch options: De Pizzabakkers, Vapiano. Brunch in Buitenveldert: Café Berkhout, Bar Brouw. Bakery Bart on Buitenveldertselaan, Vlaamsch Broodhuys on Beethovenstraat.
International workers, VU students, expat families, frequent flyers. Anyone who wants quiet and green without being far from center. Great for: fast Schiphol pendel, broad streets, kid-friendly. Less great for: nightly going-out lifers, you'll need to commute. Buitenveldert specifically excellent for families with kids.
Practical: groceries, transport, schools
Car: 3-4 years for a permit, lower than central neighborhoods. Plenty of street parking in Buitenveldert. AH on Beethovenstraat, Buitenveldertselaan, Pretoriusplantsoen. Plus on Stadionplein. International grocers: Marqt on Beethovenstraat, Marks & Spencer in De Bijenkorf at Zuidas. Schools: Amsterdam International Community School, British School of Amsterdam, Vossius gymnasium.
