What it's like

IJburg is built on man-made islands in the IJmeer. Modern architecture, broad sidewalks, beaches, family-friendly atmosphere. We here are pioneers, however weird that sounds for an Amsterdam neighborhood. It's the youngest neighborhood in the city and you can feel it: everything is recent, everything is planned around water, and everything works.

The best thing about IJburg is the water. Summer means SUP-board or sailboat from your own house. On Steigereiland, the easternmost island, Blijburg is one of the most beautiful sunset spots in the city, just the local beach with sand. Winter: bike the frozen edges of Diemerpark. Summer: swim from the docks.

The challenge is the commute. Tram 26 is reliable but 20 minutes is longer than a bike ride from Oost. Anyone commuting daily to Centrum has to budget that time. For people who work from home or work in Diemen, this isn't an issue.

Food, drinks, and culture

Blijburg beach for summer evenings, Pllek for lunch with IJ view (technically Noord, on biking distance). IJburglaan has La Volpe for Italian, Restaurant Vyne, Bar Onderlangs. Coffee at De IJver, bread at Het Lokaal. Small weekly market on IJburglaan.

Who fits here

Families with young kids who want space. People who value water and beach. Remote workers who don't mind commute time. Students with budget who want to live in biking distance of UvA. Not ideal for: nightlife junkies, anyone wanting cultural events in walking distance, anyone who dislikes modern architecture (IJburg is all new).

Practical: groceries, transport, schools

Car: short permit wait (1-2 years), plenty of parking. AH on IJburglaan and Pampuslaan, Lidl on IJburglaan. No Marqt, for specialty shops you go to Centrum. Schools: multiple Openbare Basisscholen IJburg with excellent ratings. Hyperion Lyceum has IJburg location. Sportcentrum IJburg, water sports clubs.
