Free Kamernet alternatives: find a room without paying

Looking for free alternatives to Kamernet? An overview of every option to find a room in Amsterdam without a paid subscription.

You know the routine. You find a room on Kamernet, you click reply and then: 34 euro per month. To send one message. Without any guarantee anyone will reply.

For many room hunters in Amsterdam this is the first frustration in a long process. And rightly so. You already pay hundreds of euros in rent, and now you also have to pay just to be allowed to look?

Luckily, alternatives exist. This article lays them out.

What does Kamernet cost?

Kamernet is the largest rental platform in the Netherlands. It is owned by HousingAnywhere, a company based in Rotterdam. To contact landlords on Kamernet you need a Premium account. At the time of writing it costs about 34 euro per month.

You can browse rooms and read ads for free. But the moment you want to reply or send a message, you pay. And the subscription auto-renews unless you cancel.

For landlords, posting an ad is free. That means the platform mainly makes money from seekers, not from suppliers. Whether that is fair, you can decide for yourself.

Free alternatives to Kamernet

Huismaatje

Huismaatje was built specifically as a response to frustration with paid platforms. It is fully free and focuses not just on rooms, but mainly on the match between housemates.

What makes it different:

  • Free to message, chat and match
  • You see profiles of housemates, not just an ad
  • Interactive map of Amsterdam with all available rooms
  • Schedule hospiteeravond invitations through the platform
  • Built-in chat protection against scams

Huismaatje is currently active in Amsterdam and expanding to other cities.

Facebook groups

There are dozens of Facebook groups for finding a room in Amsterdam. The biggest are "Kamer te huur Amsterdam" and "Rooms/apartments in Amsterdam." Upside: free. Downside: no quality control, lots of spam, regular fraudulent listings and zero protection.

You also have to hope the admins actually moderate the group. Some groups are well kept, others are a chaos of duplicate posts and fake offers.

Pararius

Pararius focuses more on independent rentals than on rooms in shared houses, but the platform is free for seekers. If you are looking for a studio or apartment instead of a room, it is worth checking. For shared rooms the supply is limited.

Kamer.nl

A smaller platform with free basic options. The supply is smaller than Kamernet, but you do not have to pay to reply. The interface feels a bit dated, but it works.

Direct landlords

Some landlords post ads on their own website or in local media. Check housing corporations, universities, and university colleges. The UvA and VU have housing services for students.

WoningNet

For social housing. Wait time is long (averaging 13 years in Amsterdam for an independent home), but for specific room types it can be shorter. Registration is a small one-time fee, and you build wait time after that.

What should you check when picking a platform?

Hidden fees

Some platforms are "free" but limit functionality. Others charge the moment you actually want to do something. Always read the fine print.

Fraud prevention

On free platforms the risk of fraud is higher. Watch for these signs:

  • The price is suspiciously low for the location
  • The landlord asks for money before you have seen the room
  • The photos look professional but the address does not match
  • You are redirected to an external payment platform
  • Communication is only in English with obvious mistakes

Supply in your city

Not every platform has equal supply in Amsterdam. Check the number of active rooms before investing time creating a profile.

Usability

If you search a platform daily, the interface matters. An app or website that works well saves you frustration.

Our recommendation

Use multiple channels at the same time. No single platform has all rooms. The most effective approach:

  1. Create a profile on Huismaatje for free searching with matching
  2. Turn on alerts for new rooms in your favourite neighbourhoods
  3. Join 2-3 relevant Facebook groups
  4. Tell your network you are looking
  5. Check other platforms weekly

Finding a room is a numbers game. The more channels you use, the better your odds. And if you do not have to pay for those channels, even better. Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether a free platform is safe enough to search on?

Check whether the platform has any form of identity verification, whether suspicious messages are filtered, and whether there is a report button. Platforms with no protection at all, like some Facebook groups, have a higher risk of fraudulent listings. Huismaatje automatically filters payment requests in chat.

Can I cancel my Kamernet subscription mid-term once I have found a room?

Yes, but watch the notice period. Kamernet auto-renews. Go to your account settings and cancel before the next billing cycle. If you have already paid for a period, that money is usually not refundable.

Which platform has the most supply for rooms in Amsterdam specifically?

Kamernet, as the largest Dutch platform, has the most total supply but charges for it. Huismaatje focuses specifically on Amsterdam and is free. For maximum reach it is smart to combine both, plus Facebook groups for informal listings that never appear on platforms.

Can I find a room on WoningNet on short notice?

The average wait time for an independent home in Amsterdam via WoningNet is more than 13 years. For student rooms or specific housing types it can be shorter, but do not count on success within a year. WoningNet is a good long-term complement, not a fast solution.

Why do landlords on Kamernet sometimes not reply, even though I pay 34 euro a month?

Landlords sometimes receive dozens of replies and cannot respond to everyone. A paid subscription gives you the ability to reply, but no guarantee of a response. This is exactly why a personal, specific message produces much better results than a generic copy-paste text.
